Employee Spotlight on Pierre Gaulon

Employee Spotlight on Pierre Gaulon

Our Employee Spotlight series shines a light on the people who make our business what it is, sharing the experiences, perspectives, and journeys that shape our culture.

The spotlight is on Pierre Gaulon, Head of Infrastructure. Based in Singapore, Pierre has been part of Thunes since the very beginning in 2016. As a member of our Platform Engineering and Architecture team within Technology & Product, he helps build and secure the infrastructure powering our Direct Global Network every day.

Read on to discover what keeps him motivated, what he’s learned during his time at Thunes, and why he believes curiosity is one of the most valuable qualities you can bring to work.

Much of Pierre’s work happens behind the scenes, but it’s fundamental to how Thunes operates. Every day, he helps build and secure the infrastructure that keeps our Direct Global Network running reliably for over 720 Members and across more than 140 countries.

For Pierre, that’s what makes the role so rewarding.

“When a payment goes through seamlessly, nobody thinks about the infrastructure or the security controls that make it possible. And that’s exactly how it should be. There is something satisfying about building systems that people trust without ever having to think about them.”

It’s a role that has kept him learning throughout his time at Thunes.

“There is always something to learn. Thunes moves money across 140 countries for hundreds of companies, and every market has its own standards, regulations, and technical expectations. You can’t just apply the same playbook everywhere. You have to understand the local context, adapt, and often build something new to make the connection work. The constant need to figure things out keeps every project interesting and makes you grow in ways a more static environment never would.”

Working in that environment has also challenged Pierre to keep evolving.

“I’ve learned that I’m more adaptable than I thought. Engineering in a payments company touches everything: cloud infrastructure, compliance, application security, and vendor management. You can’t stay in one lane. I’ve had to stretch, pick up new context quickly, and sometimes reframe how I think about systems and processes in a business context. It’s made me a better engineer and a better communicator.”

The willingness to learn extends beyond the technology itself. It’s also something he sees in the people around him. The diversity of Thunes has shaped how he approaches challenges at work.

“The team has next-level dedication. Whatever the project, whether it’s integrating a new partner, entering a new market or meeting a compliance requirement, everyone pulls in the same direction until it ships. There is a relentlessness to how my fellow Thunesters show up and it’s a contagious energy.”

“We have more than 60 nationalities, each bringing different perspectives that open up solutions you simply wouldn’t have found on your own. We all stay focused on delivering.”

One of the biggest challenges is keeping up with an industry that never stands still. Pierre also enjoys attending cybersecurity meetups and conferences with colleagues, keeping up to date with emerging threats and exchanging ideas with the wider security community.

“The fintech landscape is never static. New vulnerabilities are disclosed every day, regulations continue to change, and new technologies reshape what we build and how we protect it. The challenge is maintaining robust security while keeping pace with the business. That balance is what keeps the job interesting. Thinking like an attacker helps you build better defenses, and that’s a mindset that resonates with how secure we keep our network.”

For anyone considering a career at Thunes, Pierre believes curiosity and a willingness to get down to it will go a long way.

“Be hands-on and stay curious. Thunes moves fast, and the people who thrive here are the ones who jump in, learn by doing, and don’t wait for perfect conditions. If you enjoy digging into complex systems and understanding how things really work, you’ll find a lot to sink your teeth into.”
